Owosso's original radio station, WOAP at 103.1 FM and 1080 AM, announced this week that it is partnering with Owosso Public Schools to save graduation for the Class of 2020 by hosting the ceremony live on the radio and having seniors, otherwise parked in the school's parking lot, drive up to receive their diplomas when they hear their name announced.

It's a fantastic effort by the radio station to engage the community by doing its part to help during the COVID-19 crisis, and at the same time, create a one-of-a-kind memory for the district's students.

But not everyone is on board.

There's more to the story!  Keep reading!

Some students have publicly protested the idea of the unorthodox ceremony, taking to social media and pleading for administrators to nix the idea and just postpone the traditional graduation ceremony until the Coronavirus threat and Governor's "Stay Home. Stay Safe" Executive Order is lifted.

Presently, the drive-thru ceremony is planned for May 21st, the date originally planned for Owosso's graduation.  TV and radio personality, Hondo Carpenter, would be the on-air emcee.

WOAP says that if the orders are lifted and students are able to walk, the station remains comitted to broadcasting the event.
