The Owosso Twirling Gems kicked off the lighting of the city's Christmas tree downtown, twirling burning batons to the song "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" by Brenda Lee.

The parade's Top 7 entries were recognized during the tree lighting ceremony, where it was announced that nearly $1,000 in 'parade money' will be awarded to the winners.

This year's tree was dedicated in honor of former business owner, Joe Merkle.

Numerous cars from a freight train are laying on their side after a derailment in downtown Owosso area of Cass and Cedar streets. We're told the derailment involves 10 cars total, but not all of the cars tipped over.
