The first is wash your hands -- well! Spend 20 full seconds with soap and warm water after using the bathroom or changing a diaper and before eating or preparing food. The department notes that alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not effective against the Hepititis A virus.
The second is get vaccinated. The best way to protect against Hepititis A, the agency says, is to get the Hepititis A vaccine.
Hepititis A is easily passed from person to person and anyone can get Hepititis A.
An Hepititis A outbreak began in 2016 and has claimed 27 lives since. 8 cases have been reported in Shiawassee County, including at least one within the past 100 days, according to data provided by the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services.
